How to Control Mold and Fungus in Your Home

Posted by Brenda Roy on May 26, 2015

housecleanDid you know that mold can be a problem in your home, and you may not even know? If left unchecked, mold can wreak havoc not only on your home, but on your health as well. By the time mold becomes visible, it means the spores have already been in the air in your home for a long time.

Why Mold and Fungus Are Bad

Mold and fungus in your home can cause a variety of health problems. According to recent reports, fungi such as aspergillus can be deadly. Also, if you’re experiencing symptoms such as coughing, sore throats, sinus congestion, and eye irritation it could be a reaction to the mold in your environment.

Chronic mold issues could lead to greater health complications such as bronchitis and even pneumonia. If your symptoms are fairly chronic, this is a good sign that you should look into controlling the microorganisms in your home. If you have a history of respiratory sensitivity, this could make it even more likely that you have a mold or fungus problem.

Finding Mold or Fungus in Your Home

Do you detect a musty smell anywhere in your home? Do you actually see mold growing throughout your home? Places to look for mold include:

• Inside and outside your refrigerator.
• On your shower curtain or in the shower itself.
• In the corner of your windows.
• On your air conditioning unit.
• In your basement or attic.

In general, mold grows well in a damp environment. That’s why your bathrooms, kitchen, and basement are such hotspots for mold growth. These are also the places where mold tends to start growing first before it starts to affect the rest of the house.

What to Do if You Have a Mold Problem

Once you start seeing mold growing in your home, your first impulse will be to clean it. While this is a necessary step, this may not solve the problem. To clean it, you will want to find a cleaning product that will eradicate it. Look for products that specifically say they will help control mold.

Before you clean it, though, you may want to hire a team to analyze your home. Sometimes, mold damage can also occur underneath your flooring or behind the wall. If this is the case, you will need a professional to help you remove it.

Another great way to control mold and fungus in your environment is to purchase a quality air filter. This can also help control the mold or fungi in your home before it actually becomes a problem for your health and your home. You’ll want to find the best quality air filter that your budget will allow. HEPA filters, for example, are amongst the best for removing mold and fungi from the air.
