Water is essential to our bodies. It is used in various physiological processes in the body, and makes up over 70% of human anatomy. Water consists of two elements, hydrogen and oxygen, which make up a molecule of water. There are two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom resulting in the chemical formula H2O.However, if the water is hard, other elements can be present. Some of these elements include: calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese and aluminum.

Life cannot survive without water and it's importance cannot be overstated. However, the same water can be a source of disease when it is contaminated with microbes and toxic substances. It is therefore important to ensure that the water you are drinking is free from impurities and contaminants. Water filters are fast becoming virtually a requirement in homes, given current and future levels of pollution.  If the water you are drinking has toxic elements, instead of supporting your health, it may be causing harm from the chemicals and pollutants that happen to be in the water. Different water filtering methods are normally applied to remove impurities and purify the water, and each method has pros and cons.  The following are some of the most commonly used types of water filtration methods in the home and office.

  1. Reverse osmosis

Reverse osmosis based water filtration system are highly versatile. It is a great choice for removing dissolved salts and bacteria. The tiny pores of the semi-permeable membrane of the filtration system are small enough to prevent the majority of bacteria from passing through it. After prolonged use, the filters will lose effectiveness and need replacement. A common drawback of these filters is that while they may produce the highest quality of water, they are not the least expensive method of water filtration.

  1. Activated carbon filters.

Activated Carbon works by binding toxins in the water. By absorbing contaminants, it normally helps to purify water. These filters are normally suitable for removing chlorine and other chemicals from water. Activated carbon filters are normally combined with other filtration techniques in order to improve the purity of water. Activated Carbon filters have a long life, with some only requiring yearly replacement.

  1. UV Sterilization filters.

UV sterilization is one of the most effective methods of purifying water and destroying bacteria and microbes. These filters normally destroy the bacteria, irises and protozoa that might be present in your water, making it more suitable for drinking.

  1. Solar powered water filters.

Solar powered filters normally operate with the help of natural energy from the sun. This energy is trapped using solar panels and then converted to usable energy making these purifiers ideal for outdoor activities such as camping. Maintenance of many solar powered water filters is a breeze, as they do not require batteries. In addition, these filters do not typically require heavy cleaning, require only sunlight, and are quite eco friendly.

  1. Structured Water Filters

Structured water pros and consA new type of filter that is perhaps not so common. These have come under heavy fire as not not being scientifically verified. The claim is that after the water has been “structured” it reverts to it's original state, the type of water which originates from mountain springs and rivers. It does not filter the water as such, it neutralizes the water so that the toxins are rendered harmless and the water retains it vitality.

It is important to note that few waters filters effectively remove fluoride from the water, and that Brita filters and activated carbon filters other water filters do not remove any flouride, as evidenced via a simple TDS test.
