Are you one of the 50 million Americans who suffer from allergies? With allergy season in full swing, it can feel like there’s no way to get relief. Even staying indoors doesn’t seem to help. It can even make things worse! The air inside our homes can trap dust and pollen leaving it nowhere to go but into our lungs. This is the last thing you want! Luckily, there are some great ways to improve the air inside your home, which could give you some relief.
Get Rid of Moisture
If it’s mold and mildew that you’re allergic to, then moisture is not your friend. It thrives in a warm, moist environment. One great way to regulate the moisture level in your home is to use a dehumidifier. This will help stop mold and mildew grown in its tracks and give you some much-needed relief.
Purify Your Air
Pollen can enter your home whenever you open the door and then once it’s in, it stays unless you have some way of getting it out. Luckily, HEPA air filters are effective at cleansing the air and getting rid of the source of your allergies from inside your home! There are different models, so pay attention to the product specs so you can choose one that is best suited for your home environment. Most good air purifiers will also help rid the air of pollutants, which can also help your respiratory system.
Change Your Bedding
Not only is it important to wash your bedding often (at least once a week), but also the type of bedding you have makes all the difference. Down comforters, hypoallergenic mattress pads and sheets, and down pillows will all help you breathe a lot better at night. Other materials can make your allergies worse. Not only that, but you need to wash your bedding at a high temperature, at least 130 Degrees Fahrenheit, to make sure you’ve killed all the germs.
Don’t Use Fans
Even though it may seem as if fans circulate fresh air throughout your home, it actually does the opposite. Dust, pollen, and mold can get trapped on the fan blades. Once you turn it on, it circulates the debris throughout your home. Not only that, but it can also disturb the allergens elsewhere in your home, making it even tougher for you to breathe.
Hardwood Floors
You may also want to consider replacing your rugs with hardwood floors because they’re much easier to clean! Carpets can trap allergens in the fibers, making you feel worse. If you do decide to put area rugs on your hardwood, choose those that have shorter fibers and vacuum them several times a week. This will get rid of any irritants.
Just because you have seasonal allergies doesn’t mean you’re doomed to suffer! Once you improve the air quality in your home, you should notice an improvement in how you feel.
